Private jet aircraft categories
A simple guide to the aircraft categories commonly used for private jet charter missions, from short European sectors to long-range intercontinental flights.
Light Jet
Typical aircraft: Phenom 300, Citation CJ3+, Learjet 75
Approx. 1800 NM range
Typical choice for European charter missions
Light jets are often the preferred category for one-way European trips when speed, comfort, and a traditional private jet experience matter more than the lowest possible cost.
Midsize Jet
Typical aircraft: Citation XLS+, Praetor 500, Hawker 900XP
Approx. 2800 NM range
Larger cabin and stronger range than a light jet
Midsize jets offer a more spacious cabin and are often better for longer European sectors or clients who want more comfort and cabin flexibility.
Heavy Jet
Typical aircraft: Challenger 650, Falcon 900LX, Legacy 650
Approx. 5000 NM range
Premium long-range category
Heavy jets are designed for larger groups, premium cabin comfort, and longer sectors where cabin size, baggage capacity, and onboard comfort become more important.
Ultra Long Range
Typical aircraft: Gulfstream G650, Global 7500, Falcon 8X
Approx. 7000 NM range
Intercontinental nonstop mission category
Ultra long range aircraft are the correct category for true intercontinental missions such as Europe to the U.S. West Coast, the Middle East, or other long nonstop sectors.
How categories are used in the estimator
JetQuote uses route distance, passenger count, and charter-fit logic to recommend an aircraft category. The result is an indicative planning estimate, not a final operational quote.
